Villa Sofia at Dusk
Classic island heritage architecture glowing under warm twilight skies.
Before she stood on this beach, Villa Sofia stood in Java. She is a traditional Javanese Joglo, built around the 1950s and 60s from solid teak, with carved beams and traditional joinery that has held her together for decades.
Then she was carefully taken apart. Her timbers were reconditioned, shipped across the Java Sea and raised again, entirely by hand, on the white sand of Pulau Menjangan Besar. She is not a copy of an old house. She is the old house, given a second life by the sea.
ADD: a few sentences on Villa Sofia’s own story, such as where in Central Java her timbers came from, roughly what year she was built, what she was used for and who rebuilt her. This is the part guests will remember, so even small details help.
Step inside and you can feel her age. Tall timber doors open wide and the sea breeze walks straight through. Light moves slowly across hand carved teak beams above a four poster bed, and when you want it, air conditioning keeps the night cool.
It’s the kind of place where days lose their edges. A slow breakfast on the veranda, a swim before the heat, a book on the day bed, a long dinner on the sand and a late night talking while the tide comes in. Ordinary weeks become the ones you talk about for years.
Open the tall timber doors and the sea breeze comes straight through. Ceiling fans and sea breezes keep the air moving through the day, and air conditioning is there for the evenings and overnight.
As you walk off the beach, there is a stone basin for rinsing the sand off your feet before stepping onto your veranda. Thoughtfully designed furniture, including a day bed, has been commissioned with complete relaxation in mind. The veranda is finished off with traditional Javanese carved timber fretwork along the edge.
A four poster bed sits beneath hand carved antique teak beams.
ADD: bed size, bedding and linen, mosquito net, wardrobe or storage, bedside lighting and anything else guests tend to ask about.
Hot water is available in the shower 24 hours a day, and we stock natural botanical shampoo, conditioner and body soap.
ADD: whether the bathroom is open air or enclosed, the type of shower, basin and toilet, and the stone and timber finishes.
Your private veranda looks across the beach to the calm lagoon. There is a day bed for lazy afternoons, traditional Javanese carved timber fretwork along the edge and a stone basin by the steps for rinsing the sand off your feet.
ADD: seating, table or hammock, which way the veranda faces (sunrise or sunset) and anything else guests will find out there.
Villa Sofia enjoys an absolute prime beachfront position directly on the powdery white sand, placed just steps from the lapping shallows of the lagoon. Set quietly apart from the other residences, her front veranda commands completely undisturbed, open horizon views across the turquoise water and out toward the Java Sea sunsets, giving you barefoot access to the beach from the moment you wake.
