Clear, direct answers regarding travel logistics, off grid living, booking rates and wildlife on Pulau Menjangan Besar.

Travel & Arrival

How do I get to Tukiek?

Fly or take the ferry to Karimunjawa, then it is a 10 to 15 minute boat ride to the island. As part of our care for the marine park, we run three chartered boats a day, leaving Karimunjawa at 09:30, 13:00 and 16:30. Your transfer is included in your stay.

Depending on how you arrive, you may have a short wait. If you are waiting for a boat, you are welcome to relax at our beach bar and restaurant in the town centre, which is free to enter and comes with an arrival drink. If you would rather not wait, we can arrange a private transfer at cost. Crossings depend on the weather, so we will help you plan around the sea.

What is the arrival like?

The boat pulls up to the sandbar at the edge of our shallow lagoon and you step off into warm, knee deep water. Take your shoes off and wade in. Our team brings your luggage to your Joglo, so you can walk straight up the beach.

Where is Tukiek located?

Tukiek is on Pulau Menjangan Besar, a small island within the Karimunjawa Marine National Park in Central Java, Indonesia. It is a 10 to 15 minute boat ride from Karimunjawa’s main island.

What do you need from me before I arrive?

Because we bring in supplies fresh and pick from our garden, we ask for a few details 72 hours before you arrive: your flight or ferry arrival time in Karimunjawa, which boat you would like (09:30, 13:00, 16:30 or a private transfer), any food allergies or dietary needs and your choices for arrival day lunch and the beach BBQ. When you book, we will send you a guest guide and packing checklist.

What should I pack?

Lightweight clothing, reef safe sunscreen, a hat and sandals or water shoes for the sandy reef flats. Most of the island is sand and smooth teak so you can leave your shoes behind. We provide towels, drinking water and natural botanical shampoo, conditioner and body soap.

Rates & Accommodations

How much does a stay cost?

Our introductory rates are $165 USD per night for a Joglo sleeping 2 adults and $195 USD per night for Villa Marien, which sleeps up to 6 adults. Rates include tax, breakfast and your boat transfers. These are introductory rates for our first season.

What’s included in my stay?

Your Joglo, breakfast each morning and the boat transfers to and from Karimunjawa on our scheduled charters. Tax is included in our rates. Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear are free to use. Lunch, dinner and drinks are charged separately.

How many people can stay in each Joglo?

Every Joglo except Villa Marien sleeps 2 adults, and you can add a single pull out bed for an extra $35 per night. Villa Marien sleeps up to 6 adults and has no pull out bed option.

Can I see all eight Joglos?

Villa Sofia is finished and has its own page. The other seven Joglos are being fitted out and each will get its own page once it is complete. Message Chris on WhatsApp and he will tell you where each one stands.

Why is there an introductory rate?

We are opening Tukiek to a small group of founding guests while we test and refine the island experience and some of our wider facilities are still to come. In return, we have kept our rates lower for this first season. We promise no major building works during the season, which runs from March to October, so your stay is quiet and undisturbed. Any larger improvements wait until the island is closed. Once the full facilities are in place, our rates will rise.

How do I book?

Message us directly on WhatsApp. We will check dates, arrange your boat transfer and note any dietary needs. Booking direct means you are talking to the people who will be looking after you.

Can we book the whole island?

Yes. You can reserve all of Tukiek for a wedding, a family gathering or a group of friends, for up to 20 adults, with a private boat, a chef and housekeeping. The minimum stay is three nights, and a WhatsApp message is the best way to start planning.

Utilities & Dining

Is there electricity, Wi-Fi and air conditioning?

Yes. There is no mains water or electricity on the island, so quiet generators supply power around the clock, including Wi-Fi across the property. Air conditioning is available 24 hours, but we ask guests not to leave it on during the day, because we want to keep our use of non renewable power on the island as low as we can. Ceiling fans and sea breezes keep the Joglos comfortable through the day.

Is there hot water?

Yes. Hot water is available in the showers 24 hours a day.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes. There is no mains water on the island, so our drinking water is imported and served in refillable glass bottles. We do not use single use plastic bottles. We also ask guests to use our biodegradable toiletries and reef safe sunscreen so the lagoon stays clean. Water is precious here, so please use it with care.

What will we eat?

Breakfast comes with your stay. In the evening there is a beach BBQ, with the catch of the day grilled over coconut husk embers and lunch is a relaxed, simple menu. Let us know about any dietary needs before you arrive and we will plan around them.

Who looks after us on the island?

A small, friendly team who each do a bit of everything. The person who carries your luggage across the sand might also bring your afternoon juice and tend the fire at sunset. It keeps the island quiet and uncrowded and it means you get to know the people looking after you.

Nature & Experiences

When is the best time to visit?

Tukiek’s season runs from March to October, when the seas are at their calmest and the turtles come ashore to nest. Our first season begins with a soft opening in May 2027.

What is there to do?

Swim, snorkel, paddleboard and kayak in the lagoon or just sit on your deck and watch the water. We also work with local operators for diving, baby turtle sanctuary visits, jet skiing, island tours and we are happy to arrange them.

Does the tide affect the lagoon?

Yes. The lagoon is 300 metres long and at low tide the water pulls back so you can walk out across the shallows before reaching deeper water. Our team will let you know when the tide suits walking, swimming or paddling.

When can I see turtles nesting?

Green sea turtles nest on the beach between March and October. In those months you might see a mother come ashore at night or hatchlings making their way to the sea at dawn. It is wildlife, so we cannot promise a sighting, but you will be in the right place.

How can I help protect the turtles?

If you walk on the beach in the evening, keep your torch low and dim. If a turtle comes ashore, keep a quiet distance and let her nest undisturbed.
